Description

The St. Louis Children’s Choirs - Artistic Director

About the Choirs:

The mission of the St. Louis Children’s Choirs is “shaping young lives through musical excellence.” Our proven educational program reaches up to 450 students from over 200 schools and 85 zip codes each year, with singers performing throughout St. Louis and touring worldwide. The Choirs serve as the official children’s choir of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, regularly perform with the Bach Society of St. Louis and the Ambassadors of Harmony, and provide community engagement through teacher workshops, summer camps, and alumni activities.

Mission Focus:

We seek a visionary conductor with high artistic and character standards whose experience resonates with the Choirs’ mission, and whose passion, energy, and dedication will build on the organization’s 45-year tradition and legacy of exceptional choral music education and character development.

Essential Functions:

  • Artistic and Organizational Leader – Establishes and communicates the artistic vision for the organization. Works in partnership with the Board of Directors to develop long- and short-term goals, as well as strategies to achieve those goals. Responsible for enrollment growth both in terms of number and diversity; explores new performance opportunities and artistic collaborations; develops community engagement presence; and deepens alumni relations. Works with the staff to coordinate and execute performances, collaborations, national and international tours, recordings, and commissioned works.

  • Organizational Ambassador – Serves as the “face” of the organization, and effectively executes the role of primary organizational spokesperson. Engages in opportunities to further the recognition and brand of the Choirs on a local, regional, national, and international level. Supports stewardship of major donors in coordination with the Development Director and Board of Directors.

  • Performing Artist – Fosters a love of music and sets the standard for nurturing the full expression of each choir member’s potential for artistic excellence and character development. Conducts in a skilled, expressive, and self-assured manner. Directs Concert Choir, the advanced touring ensemble. Seeks out and participates in personal professional development opportunities.

  • Educator – Cultivates and maintains a nurturing, respectful, wholesome, and inspiring environment in which children and young people work and grow as young artists, with an emphasis on musical excellence and character development. Upholds a code of conduct, sets policies in support of character education, and models the highest level of character and integrity. Maintains effective communication with staff and parents, provides guidance to ensemble directors, and coordinates response to individual student and parent needs (including matters of discipline and socio-emotional/developmental needs) with tact, professionalism, and sensitivity.

  • Innovative Director Develops annual season programming featuring diverse, high-quality repertoire that engages young singers and delivers a superior, well-rounded music education experience. Programming includes concerts, community engagement, and education programs, as well as initiatives to foster collaborations. Supervises and evaluates ensemble directors regarding concert programming and approves all repertoire.

  • Artistic and Administrative Staff Manager – Manages a team of six ensemble directors and helps oversee a team of 23 administrative and artistic staff. Hires and manages a cohesive staff of teacher-conductors, accompanists, and guest artists, keeping them appropriately informed and guiding them to ensure a high level of music education and artistry is maintained. Provides and encourages professional development for artistic staff.

  • Fiduciary – In coordination with the COO, determines the artistic revenue and expense side of the budget and participates in an annual budgeting process. In coordination with the Choir Manager, negotiates and/or oversees artistic contracts with outside artists and performing arts organizations. Reviews grants and funding proposals. Works to advance fundraising activities, engage alumni, and provide fiscal, strategic, and administrative leadership. Reviews grants and funding proposals from an artistic perspective.

  • Reports to Board of Directors – Acts as liaison to the Board President and participates in the following committees: Executive, Nominating, Finance, Human Resources, and Experience. Assists in identifying potential board members and community supporters.
